A historic horse barn. A very specific vision. And a floor that needed to look as though it had always belonged there.
When the owners of Cherry Grove on the Creek transformed the loft of their historic horse barn, they didn’t want a floor that looked new. They wanted natural wood, rich character and varying plank widths that would give the space the warmth and authenticity of an old country store.
The answer wasn’t sitting on a showroom shelf. It had to be created.
The Challenge
The challenge was finding a new hardwood floor that didn’t feel new. The barn already had a story, and the owners wanted the renovated loft to honor it. Uniform boards, predictable coloring and a conventional flooring pattern would have felt out of place.
They envisioned something warmer and less perfect: natural variation, visible character and different plank widths that would make the finished floor feel collected over generations rather than installed all at once.
The floor needed to complement the history of the barn, not compete with it.

This is where From Forest to Finished Floor becomes more than a tagline. Instead of asking the owner to choose a product number, Union Church started with the vision.
Our craftsmen used their knowledge of Appalachian hardwoods to identify wood with the right natural character (distressed heritage oak), then hand-selected boards for their grain, color and personality. Varying widths were incorporated intentionally to help create the authentic, time-worn country-store appearance the owner wanted.
But we didn’t stop at producing the flooring. Union Church carried that vision through installation and finishing, making decisions along the way that allowed the wood itself to remain the star.

From selecting the wood to laying the final board, Union Church was responsible for bringing the original idea to life.
The Exquisite Result
The finished floor looks less like something that was added to the barn and more like something uncovered within it.
Natural variations move from board to board. Different plank widths break up the predictability of a modern floor. Knots, grain and subtle shifts in tone give the loft the warmth and character the owners imagined.
Today, the renovated barn loft combines historic character with modern comfort, and the locally sourced Virginia wood floor has become an integral part of that experience. It feels authentic because it is authentic.
